About the Project

The National Music Centre’s new space showcases over 2,000 rare instruments and artifacts including the Rolling Stones’ Mobile Studio, one of Elton John’s pianos and collections from both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. There are 5 floors in the main museum building, including a performance theatre and exhibition space. An enclosed pedestrian bridge crossing 4th Street SE connects the main museum building to the historic King Edward Hotel, which was refurbished as part of the project.

Our Solution

Spalding was chosen by CANA Construction to be the museum’s door supplier and installer to manage the door, frame, hardware, and security component scope of the project. Needless to say, this project posed many unique challenges, including:

  • The recording studio vestibule openings were specially designed for sound attenuation.
  • The doorways into the theatre were clad in material that matched the surrounding walls, making them unusually thick, and requiring special hardware applications for support and function.
  • Some of the storage areas needed extraordinarily wide doors with cladding that matched the walls, requiring us to design and install special wood doors and hardware to suit.
  • As the King Eddy is a historical building, we needed to find period-matching door hardware with special finishes to integrate into the unique design.

Spalding is proud to have been part of this iconic landmark that will benefit Calgarians and visitors for generations.
